POWERDOG PROGRAM: MOBILIZE
EFFORTS FOR PRAIRIE DOG PRESERVATION
AND RELOCATION AT THE LOCAL LEVEL!
Prairie
dogs colonies throughout the Front Range are in peril as development continues
to expand and encroach on their land.
Targeting key officials at the local levels of government -- city and
county -- may be one of the most effective ways to help black-tailed prairie
dogs. City and county government
officials need to be urged to develop protective measures for prairie dogs and
to provide open space land for conservation and relocation efforts.
Attend local city
council and county commissioner meetings and speak out for prairie dogs. Urge
city and/or county officials to adopt measures to protect prairie dogs and the
diverse wildlife they attract in their colonies. Local governments need to hear that their residents are concerned
about this issue.
Encourage key
officials with your local Parks and Open Space Department to take
action on behalf of prairie dogs. Talk
with these officials about establishing policies to protect existing colonies
on open space land and about acquiring additional land or purchasing
conservation easements for prairie dog reintroduction efforts.
Write to key
officials at both the city and county levels about your concern for prairie
dogs. Ask them to enact ordinances that
prohibit poisoning, bulldozing or other acts of destruction against prairie
dogs and urge them to designate open space land for the preservation and
relocation of prairie dogs.
