PRAIRIE DOG READING LIST
Given the ecological importance of prairie dogs, along with their biological imperilment,
it is essential for activists to have some background in prairie dog biology and ecology. We recommend the following
books and articles, which should be available through your local library:
- Miller, Brian, Ceballos, Gerardo, and Richard P. Reading. 1994. "The Prairie Dog and
Biotic Diversity." Conservation Biology 8(3):677-81.
- Miller, Brian, Reading, Richard P., and Steve Forrest. 1996. Prairie
Night: Black-Footed Ferrets and the Recovery of Endangered Species. Washington: Smithsonian
Institution Press. [This book is focused on black-footed ferrets, but includes important scholarship on prairie
dogs].
- Sharps, Jon C. and Daniel W. Uresk. 1990. "Ecological Review of Black-tailed Prairie
Dogs and Associated Species in Western South Dakota." Great Basin Naturalist 50(4):339-45.
- Whicker, April K. and James K. Detling. 1988. "Ecological Consequences of Prairie Dog
Disturbances." Bioscience 38:778-85.
- Wuerthner, George. 1997. "Viewpoint: The Black-tailed Prairie Dog - headed for Extinction?"
Journal of Range Management 50(5): 459-66.
For a broad overview of the endangered status of North American grasslands, we recommend:
- Samson, Fred B. and Fritz L. Knopf. 1996. Prairie Conservation. Washington, DC: Island Press.
Action: To help prairie dogs, be an informed defender. Relay
to others what you have learned, and share the above articles or books with friends, family, and co-workers.
This list is just to get you started.
