Thanks to the efforts of Donna Nespoli, with the help of RMAD activists Lorissa ArgoRay and Mike Stabler, Nathan Cahoone, a biology professor at Front Range Community College in Westminster, Colorado, has decided to use alternative methods to dissection in his classes. Just Say No to Nalgene

When RMAD supporter Linda Rose learned her company planned to put its name on 400 Nalgene water bottles and distribute them at an annual members' conference, she spoke up. She told the decision makers that the Nalge-Nunc Corporation, which makes Nalgene bottles, is a major supporter of animal research. Marketing manager Julie Welch and conferences manager Debbie Giallombardo, both animal lovers, agreed that purchasing Nalgene bottles was not the right thing to do. Instead, they purchased 400 GSI Outdoor bottles, which are identical in performance to the Nalgene water bottles and are priced to compete. People loved them!

Linda said that the real reward was knowing that more than $3,000 did NOT go to the Nalge-Nunc Corporation.

Schweitzer the Turkey Survives the Holidays

RMAD supporter Laura was on her way home when she pulled up next to a truck loaded with turkeys headed for the local slaughterhouse in Longmont. Thinking that she had nothing to lose, she asked the driver whether he would give her one of the turkeys.

"It made me SICK to know what awaited them inside the gates," Laura said. "I wanted to save them all, but I was really blessed to save one."

RMAD Raises Awareness on the Radio

RMAD succeeded in raising awareness of animal suffering recently on two separate occasions involving Denver radio. First, the RMAD office made a polite call to KTCL 93.3 in response to a holiday promotional piece that portrayed a fictional scenario in which a cat was harmed. We told the program manager that cats already suffer so much abuse and so many are killed waiting for homes in shelters or live their lives on the streets. Thankfully, KTCL responded by immediately withdrawing the promo.

When Habitat for Humanity destroyed native habitat and killed native wildlife in November 2003, morning radio host Danny (of "Jamie and Danny," KISS-FM 95.7) took the opportunity to malign prairie dogs, adding insult to death. RMAD members responded with calls castigating Danny for blaming the victims and disseminating his ignorance and hatred over the airwaves. Program director Jim Lawson pulled the show from the rerun line-up to ensure it won't air again.
