COYOTES AT RISK

This is an extra edition of eNews
We need YOU to help the coyotes NOW

Putting a spotlight on Broomfield

As you may know, five coyotes were recently shot by the Division of Wildlife in Broomfield. At this time no further action by the DOW is planned, BUT you can help ensure coyotes are saved, people are educated and pets are protected.

Please take a moment to email the Division of Wildlife's director, Tom Remington, to share your thoughts on this action. The Division of Wildlife is saying, on the one hand, that killing coyotes doesn't work, and that people need to take responsibility, but then the Division goes out and guns down 5 coyotes because a woman invited coyotes to play with her off-leash dog. And then an off-duty police officer's off-leash dog chased a coyote. Both incidents were human folly. Yet the coyotes were killed.

If you live in Broomfield, click here and contact your elected officials. At the March 24th council meeting, they will consider drafting a Coexistence with Coyotes Policy and increasing the enforcement of off-leash law violations (a key element in coyotes getting killed lately). Take action as you see fit; speak for the coyote!

If you like to hike, visit Broomfield open space. Watch for coyotes and haze them as possible. A map is here, but you might want to call 303-464-5803 for your own copy.

Educate yourself. This page on Broomfield’s website is pretty good.

Greenwood Village coyotes still need your help

Dr. Nicole Rosmarino of WildEarth Guardians (and formerly of RMAD) has taken the lead on helping to resolve coyote conflicts in Greenwood Village, where the city council is paying for someone to shoot coyotes on city open space.

You can help! Contact Nicole if you can be a volunteer monitor: 303-573-4898, x642; e-mail: e-nrosmarino@wildearthguardians.org

You will be looking for coyotes to haze, trying to save their lives by increasing their aversion to humans.

If you are a Greenwood Village resident, make sure you've signed the residents' letter of opposition to the city's killing program. Email Nicole for more information.

Write a letter in support of the op-ed published in the Denver Post on March 11 by Cherry Creek High School junior and Greenwood Village resident Peter Ingram. He criticizes Greenwood Village's killing approach and questions whether the Matthew Scheper incident was true. Good for Peter for speaking out. Additional reasons to question the Scheper incident (which Peter did not raise): it was not reported by Scheper's mother, Debbie, for 7 days despite the fact that she later described it as life-threatening to the city council. Debbie is clearly hostile to coyotes, calling them "diseased" and "overpopulated and insisting that trapping was the only way to address coyote conflicts. Furthermore, the police did not interview the only witness, Matthew Scheper, until nearly two months later. Email your letter to: openforum@denverpost.com.

What’s it like to go undercover on a Factory Farm?

From Barb Bear, long-time activist: “Wow, if you thought being an activist by leafleting or protesting was tough, click here to read what this guy has to go through. Interestingly, when asked what the worst thing is he has ever seen, he described egg "farms". If you haven't dropped eggs from your diet yet, there's no time like the present.”
