HAPPY NEW YEAR!   01/01/2009

Mark it down:  Saturday Jan 10th, shop at Sunflower Market in Arvada

Arvada’s Sunflower Farmers Market is partnering with RMAD on Saturday Jan 10th from noon to 2:00 to create a tasty fundraising event. We’ll have cheap treats to sell and animal rights and veg lit to hand out. We’d love a nice turnout to show Sunflower the value of working with RMAD. The Market is on the west side of Wadsworth – 7725 Wadsworth Blvd.,  Arvada.

Conference call : How to convert stores that sell puppies, Tues 1/6/09

Last Chance for Animals in California has been very successful working on pet stores selling puppies. In fact LCA recently succeeded in convincing an owner in Malibu to only sell pet supplies and shelter animals. An even bigger change happened at another pet store: "We really wanted to be part of a solution," said The Puppy Store owner Clark Duval. "There's just such a terrible overpopulation of these pets." FANTASTIC! Click here to see the news story

How does LCA do it? Join the conference call to hear more!

Help Homeless Dogs

Did you know...?

Denver has the fifth highest number of homeless people in the country. The National Coalition of the Homeless estimates that 10-24% of homeless people have cats or dogs.

RMAD is partnering with local veterinarians to distribute food, pet supplies and veterinary care to the pets of the homeless.

How can you help? DONATE STUFF!

Please consider donating any of the items below (we are especially in need of food):

·   Dog or cat food, wet or dry

·   Large Tupperware containers

·   Gallon Ziploc bags

·   Can openers

·   Pet supplies such as leashes, collars, food bowls, chew toys, blankets, dog sweaters, flea collars

·   Cash to purchase these items

There are FOUR ways you can donate!

·   Drop off at RMAD Board member Lynée's home in Broomfield (click here to send her an email).

·   Drop off at Deer Creek Animal Hospital (10148 W. Chatfield Avenue, Littleton…303-973-4200).

·   Buy food or supplies over the phone from Willow Run Feed Store (303-466-5971, ask for Lucas or Scott and mention RMAD). Willow Run stocks both vegan and vegetarian dog food, although any brand of food is welcomed for the program.

·   Call RMAD and make a monetary donation that will be used 100% for this program – 303-449-4422.

Our first distribution to homeless dogs (and people) is planned and will be occurring soon. Stay tuned for updates.

Protest for the Pups, December 20th

Dec 20th saw several activists (including two dogs) outside of Longmont’s Pet Spot store. Even though there was a freezing stiff wind, we did outreach for nearly three hours (the dogs left early), followed by some welcome hot coffee at a local restaurant. Click here to read the news story.

This peaceful event was part of a nationwide day of protest sponsored by Companion Animal Protection Society and In Defense of Animals. Similar protests occurred in nineteen other US cities.

Speaking of Demos...

Every Saturday at 11:30, join the anti-fur demo at Cherry Creek. Click here for more info.

More Fur News

Donna Karan, the target of an aggressive anti-fur campaign, has announced that her fall 2009 lines will be fur-free and that she has "no plans" to use fur in the future!

Activists and supporters will be putting the brakes on any "Donna Karan: Bunny Butcher" antics, which have included protesting outside her boutiques, crashing her runway show, and exposing her cruel use of fur online. PETA led the way to this victory!

State Vet Update

Thanks to all of you who responded with emails to the state Agriculture Commissioner regarding the appointment of the new state veterinarian. This position oversees a variety of state programs, including PACFA (the state program that is responsible for protecting dogs and puppies, among other animals).

Dr. Keith Roehr was chosen. RMAD is not encouraged by the selection, as Dr. Roehr is not known for his pro-animal positions. This most likely means that we will all have to get even more involved with PACFA, insisting that laws are followed and animals are protected.

I will not eat anything that walks, runs, skips, hops or crawls.  God knows that I've crawled on occasion, and I'm glad that no one ate me.
