TENS OF THOUSANDS OF ANIMALS TO BE KILLED
BY CASTLE ROCK DEVELOPERS
Castle Rock Development Company (CRDC) is responsible for the massive extermination
of a prairie dog colony that was nearly 1000 acres in size.
About half of the colony has been poisoned, and your action is urgently needed
on behalf of the animals slated to die. That colony is located east of Parker Road in Aurora, and is bisected by
E-470. This single act of destruction will result in the agonizing deaths of tens of thousands of prairie animals.
- CRDC conducted this poisoning months and possibly years in advance of when construction
will begin. They conducted this poisoning to avoid abiding by any protections provided by the federal government
under the Endangered Species Act.
- Rocky Mountain Animal Defense offered a variety of non-lethal solutions to the
situation, but CRDC failed to respond.
- The poison used causes a death that can last up to three days, and is characterized
by the animals literally drowning in their own blood. This poison kills all life in the burrow, and may therefore
be a violation of state law (i.e. the state ban on indiscriminate poisoning, trapping, and snaring of wildlife).
- Prairie dogs have been reduced by 99% over the past century. Prairie dogs are
recognized as imperiled by scientists. With the decline of prairie dogs comes a decline in those species associated
with the prey base and habitat provided by prairie dog towns. These animals need protection, not further destruction.
- CRDC is poisoning this incredible colony for yet another golf course that we
do not need!
- This is the SINGLEST LARGEST PRAIRIE DOG COLONY TO BE DESTROYED IN THE ENTIRE
GREAT PLAINS IN RECENT YEARS! The devastation of this ecosystem has to stop, and it has to stop NOW.
WHAT YOU CAN DO…
Call your state representatives! Tell them how you feel about this. Tell them
to take responsibility for protecting our
wildlife. Tell them to enforce Amendment 14, which prohibits this kind of indiscriminate wildlife destruction.
